The way that a ground heat pump water heater works is somewhat differently.  These work by using the heat stored in the earth, and transferring it to your water source.  They are somewhat more effective than an air unit, and will also be able to heat your water to much hotter temperatures.  For this reason a ground heat pump water heater may be a better alternative for most people.  However, they can be much more costly and complicated to install as a result.

While both types of heat pump water heater are more energy efficient than other water heating methods, there are large disadvantages to both types.  One of the largest being that they can’t heat water to the same high temperatures as both a water heater, or a solar panel heater.  This means you may not be able to take your standard hot showers, or wash dishes or clothing in the same way.  Plus, depending upon where you live, the type of heat pump water heater may not work as effectively.  This means you’ll need to do a lot of research beforehand, so that you can ensure you find the perfect unit for where you live.
