On Demand

All about hot water heating systems and which may be best for your needs. Gas, solar, electric, and more.

On demand hot water heaters only provide you with hot water when it’s needed. Why are these heating tanks so special? Well, they do not have stand by heat losses.  This means that water is only hot when it needs to be hot, and it’s not being heated all the time. It requires energy and money to keep water hot all the time.  This is why more people are considering making the switch to save money on their energy bills. On-demand water heating provides you with a constant supply of hot water at all times.  There are no exceptions to this.

Now, the bad news. On-demand hot water heaters cost more on average then your typical storage water heater initially. In the long run you may find yourself paying less in energy costs and maintenance fees, but the up front cost is higher. Also, the hot water takes longer to come about in most cases.  While “on-demand” may give you the impression that the water comes instantaneously, if you want really hot water it may take some time to produce.

On average, an on demand water heater will cost around $1,000. You want to purchase one that has  an energy factor of at least 0.80. The higher the energy factor number, the more money you will save on energy costs over time. You won’t save thousands of dollars using on demand hot water heaters but you will save between $50-$100 per year. That might not sound like much but during these hard times, saving any money is better than saving no money.

You must determine beforehand how large you will need your instantaneous water heater to be. For those who live alone, a 30-gallon tank will suffice. If you are a family of five then a 60-gallon heating unit will work well. If two people plan on taking a shower using hot water at the same time, the heater may not be able to handle the flow.

Many older models installed in today’s homes are over-sized. We now know that not every home needs a massive water heater for us to have hot water ready.

On demand hot water heaters should be installed by professionals because there are numerous factors to consider before the installation process can begin. For example, if an existing heater is too far from the outside or the vent is blocked by snow, the installing the unit may be impossible, especially in the cases of on demand electric water heaters.

If you are in the market for a new water heater or purchasing one for the first time in your new home, an instant hot water heater is definitely one to consider. If you are still unsure about which one to purchase, researching them thoroughly will help you come with one that may be best for your situation. It doesn’t matter what type of water heater is selected as long as it works when called upon, saves on energy and saves you money.

Overall, on demand hot water heaters are an excellent, energy efficient source for all of your hot water needs.
